Profile

Ulrich Schlie joined the Foreign Service in 1993 as a member of the 48th attaché course after working for the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) in Ebenhausen/Isar for two years. He was the political director at the Federal Ministry of Defence, Berlin from 2012 to 2014 and headed the Policy Planning Staff of the Minister of Defence from 2005 to 2012. He habilitated in February 2020 with a thesis on the strategic change in the foreign and security policy of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1949 at the Andrássy University in Budapest. In 1992 he obtained his doctorate at the University of Bonn with a thesis bearing the title “Secret talks with the opponent. The Western Powers and the Peace Issue in World War II”. He completed his studies in Medieval and Modern History, Political Science and Romance Studies in 1991 with a Magister Atrium degree at the University of Bonn.

Ulrich Schlie was the owner of the Chair for Diplomacy II at Andrássy University Budapest, Professor of Practice at Tufts University (Medford, MA/USA), Fellow at the Weatherhead Center at Harvard University (Cambridge, MA/USA), Visiting Fellow at the Nato Defence College Rome, Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge/UK and Professeur associé as holder of the Alfred Grosser Chair at the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po).

Master of Arts "Strategy and International Security" (MSIS)

The Master's programme "Strategy and International Security", developed by the Henry Kissinger Professorship, will start in the winter term 2023/24 at the Institute for Political Science and Sociology at the University of Bonn.

Events Hosted by the HKP

The Henry Kissinger Professorship for Security and Strategic Studies (HKP) hosts a number of events with distinguished guests from academia, politics, and business, both as part of CASSIS and in cooperation with external partners.

Past Events and Event Series: 

In cooperation with the Institut Français Bonn, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and the Centre Ernst Robert Curtius (CERC) of the University of Bonn, the Henry Kissinger Professorship organised another edition of the Franco-German Strategic Dialogue with the theme Global Power Shifts and a Common Franco-German Perspective. The discussion at the Institut Français Bonn focused on the key factors of the Franco-German tandem for Europe as well as a common perspective for the future.

In cooperation with the Institut Français Bonn, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and the Centre Ernst Robert Curtius (CERC) of the University of Bonn, the Henry Kissinger Professorship organised another edition of the Franco-German Dialogue on the rise of the Gulf monarchies. The online discussion dealt with cooperation possibilities and dependency relationships of Germany and France with the Gulf monarchies.

Together with the Institut Français Bonn, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and the Centre Ernst Robert Curtius (CERC) of the University of Bonn, the Henry Kissinger Professorship organised another edition of the French-German Dialogue. In particular, the question of how the partners Germany and France can achieve their diverging interests in the Indo-Pacific was discussed.

Together with the Bonner Akademie für Forschung und Lehre praktischer Politik (BAPP) and the Ludwig-Erhard-Stiftung e.V., the Henry Kissinger Professorship for Security and Strategy Studies organizes a panel discussion about the Social market economy in Germany. The panel consists of Prof. Dr. h.c. mult. Roland Koch, Thomas Schmid, Prof. Sigmar Gabriel and Lani Döhring and is moderated by Ulrich Schlie.
