From the perspective of Prof. Dr. Andreas Heinemann-Grüder, political scientist and expert on armed conflicts in the post-Soviet states, Vladimir Putin “cannot sustain this war indefinitely". He pointed to increasing political and economic challenges for the Kremlin: desertions within the Russian armed forces, corruption, opposition from some regions that are bearing high personnel costs for the war in Ukraine, inflation, and declining growth forecasts. Prof. Dr. Heinemann-Grüder also explained Putin's current strategic interests. The Russian president is no longer concerned with demilitarizing the whole of Ukraine, but with getting the United States to stop supporting Ukraine. This is because Putin can “[...] deal with the Europeans on his own.”
