A full reopening of the strait is considered unlikely, as Iran’s primary interest appears to be in enforcing the toll it demands from merchant ships. The greatest danger to ships and their crews continues to stem from the ongoing hostilities—a risk that is virtually untenable for private shipping companies. Even if the strait were formally reopened, the threat would remain, for example from sea mines.
Although the German Navy possesses specialized capabilities for clearing such sea mines, carrying out such an operation under combat conditions would be extremely difficult. Furthermore, it would in any case take a considerable amount of time and require a permanent presence of ships and specialized forces on site.
