According to the latest election polls, the AfD is reaching up to 18 percent in Germany's most populous state. In Duisburg and Gelsenkirchen in particular—where the AfD achieved results of just under 25 percent in the last parliamentary elections—there is growing concern that the AfD could come to power in these two economically disadvantaged cities in the Ruhr Area. However, Prof. Dr. Kronenberg gave a partial all-clear in his interview with Bild: Although the AfD has gained ground in the latest election polls, the Ruhr region “[...] will certainly not turn blue across the board.” In the event of a runoff election involving an AfD candidate, the other parties would most certainly unite against him, according to the political scientist.

Prof. Dr. Volker Kronenberg is Speaker and Director of the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS) as well as Professor for Political Science at the University Bonn
