According to Dr. Weber's analysis, the meeting between Trump and Putin will not result in any significant consequences for the further course of the war in Ukraine. From the political scientist's point of view, Trump allowed himself to be flattered by Putin and was unable to force him to compromise. The Russian president emerged as the real winner from the meeting, as “[...] time continues to work in Russia's favor,” according to Dr. Weber. Neither Russia nor the US would deviate from their original positions on the war in Ukraine in the aftermath of the meeting. From Dr. Weber's perspective, Russia will continue to pursue its original goal of “creating facts” by occupying as much Ukrainian territory as possible before a hypothetical ceasefire comes into effect. The US, Dr. Weber analyzed, still wants to end the war in Ukraine as quickly as possible and continues to reject an own financing of Ukraine's war efforts. At the end of the interview, Dr. Weber explained that the current US stance complicates the overall situation for NATO, as doubts about America's long-term commitment to NATO remain. It is still unclear whether the Western defense alliance will be able to maintain its “substantive substance”, Dr. Weber said.
