Hotspot Latin America: Authoritarianism, Democracy & Geopolitics
Latin America plays an increasingly important role in the international politics and economy of the 21st century. At the same time, its countries face immense regional challenges. However, in German and European foreign and security policy, the region has long played a subordinate role.
We take this opportunity to discuss the fundamental crises and challenges currently facing Latin American society and politics. What is the state of human rights in Latin America? To what extent is political violence escalating in the countries? Are authoritarian regimes strengthening? How do external actors influence developments in the region, and what interests do they pursue?
