In the latest issue of "Herder Korrespondenz," Ulrich Schlie writes about Eugen Gerstenmaier and his role in the resistance against National Socialism. As one of the few survivors of July 20, 1944, who later assumed a leading political position in the Federal Republic of Germany, Gerstenmaier exemplifies the connection between resistance, Christian faith, and political responsibility. Ulrich Schlie traces his journey from the Kreisau Circle through persecution and imprisonment by the Nazi regime to his tenure as President of the German Bundestag. At the same time, he sheds light on the difficult process of commemorating July 20 in the early Federal Republic and Gerstenmaier’s contribution to keeping the resistance against the Nazi regime alive in the national memory.
