Europe has lost ground, especially in patents for digital technologies. The data from the new policy brief, produced in cooperation with the Vodafone Institute, points to sharply rising dependencies.
Digital IP is increasingly controlled in East Asia and the United States. European digital firms are becoming less and less innovative, so the economic and political costs of this decline in innovation are growing. These effects will be felt for a long time and leave little hope for a more technologically autonomous Europe in the future.
More digital sovereignty and a sustainably functioning digital economy in Europe requires more patents, but the opposite is happening.
