This article examines the implications of current geopolitical transformations for strategic thinking in Germany. Against this backdrop, it explores the extent to which the humanities and social sciences have contributed to the development of ideas about war and peace, while identifying enduring gaps and shortcomings in this intellectual tradition. The analysis focuses on the interplay of three closely interconnected dimensions: first, Germany as a distinctive strategic case; second, the role of political science in addressing applied questions of security and defence policy; and third, the societal understanding and acceptance of the military and military policy in Germany. By bringing these perspectives together, the article sheds light on the opportunities and limitations of strategic thinking in contemporary Germany.
