Europe must act confidently and set clear boundaries in order to effectively safeguard its security interests in the future. These red lines became particularly visible when a U.S. military intervention in Greenland was briefly considered possible. In this context, European states had unambiguously signaled that territorial integrity was not negotiable. According to Dr. Frank Umbach, these fundamental interests now need to be clearly defined and consistently defended.
Crucial to success, however, is a credible European capacity for action, which must be underpinned primarily by a substantial increase in military capabilities. Dr. Frank Umbach called for significantly faster progress in arms development and procurement, noting that, in his assessment, the advances made so far remain too slow.
